Did you know that there is a nonprofit here in Brunswick County dedicated to helping teens? Coastal Carolina Outreach (CCO) was started in 2022 by Brian and Carrie Higgins. They watched their own teens spending more time in front of their phones, less time outdoors, and some of their kids really struggling with their mental health. They decided to be a part of the solution. CCO’s mission is to improve the overall well-being and mental health of teens through nature, connection, art, and education. All of their programs and events are free to participants. Here is a snapshot of what is happening at Coastal Carolina Outreach.
Hope Rocks is an ongoing support group for teen girls that meets weekly. This program is designed for teen girls to learn healthy ways to cope with the stress and struggles of life and have the opportunity to build positive relationships with their peers. Education, open dialogue, art, guest speakers, community service, and special events are all incorporated into this special group.
Fly True Archery Club is an opportunity for teens to learn archery. The teens will also build confidence, focus, and positive peer connections. Every clinic or club has at least one coach who has been through the USA Archery Coach Training. Once a teen completes a clinic, they may attend Archery Club. The club meets every other Saturday during the school year. Summer hours are still to be finalized.
CCO’s first Family Drum Circle in December was such a hit that it has been made a regular monthly event. The experience of a drum circle is almost indescribable. Not only do you connect through making music together, but it leaves you feeling rejuvenated and relaxed. You do not have to have any musical experience or talent to have a meaningful experience. Family Drum Circle is a great way for families to have some quality time. Anyone 10+ is welcome to attend.
The newest edition to CCO programming is Teen Takeovers. The mission of Teen Takeovers is to give teens the opportunity to build positive peer relationships while having new experiences to gain a greater appreciation for nature, art, and their community. So far CCO has partnered with local businesses to host a New Years Party, pottery painting, and a community outreach to bring St. Patrick’s Day smiles to the residents of a local nursing home with a craft project and holiday socks. In March, a self-love yoga and meditation session took place. Plans are in the works for a presentation by the Ocean Isle Beach Turtle Protection Organization, a fossil hunting excursion, basic self-defense, art and ice cream, and more.
Coastal Carolina Outreach will be having a Ribbon Cutting and Open House on April 24 from 12-2 pm. All are welcome to attend to meet the founders, tour the property, and grab some lunch at the CRCI Food Truck. CCO is also having its first teen photo contest.
